KTP News “Energy for the Future” Conference

Business

June 14

The “Energy for the Future” Conference was held on 8th June 2010 in London and a Glyndwr University KTP associate was selected to present out of a possible 1300 projects UK wide.

At this prestigious event only 3 Knowledge Transfer Partnership projects were showcased and Morgan Electro Ceramics Ltd based in Ruabon near Wrexham who recently had a Shorter KTP with Glyndwr University was selected out of a possible 1,300 UK wide projects to make a presentation at this conference. The key motive for Morgan Electro Ceramics being selected to present was that their Shorter KTP was associated to Energy Harvesting.

Cedric Belloc the KTP Academic Supervisor on the project states that according to a newly published report, the total market for energy harvesting devices, including everything from wristwatches to wireless sensors, is $605 million in 2010.  The market is expected to rise to $4.4 billion in 2020. Energy harvesting, also known as power harvesting or energy scavenging, is the use of ambient energy to power small electronic or electrical devices. Energy harvesting includes photovoltaics, thermovoltaics, piezoelectrics and electrodynamics. According to the same report, "The technology has reached a tipping point, because the necessary lower power electronics and more efficient energy gathering and storage are now sufficiently affordable, reliable and longer lived for a huge number of applications to be practicable”.

The immense success of this Shorter KTP has lead to advanced discussions with both Glyndwr University and the company on following up this project on an advanced scale
through to a Classic KTP.

Sam Clutton emphasized that the KTP team at Glyndwr saw this event as excellent opportunity to raise not only the profile of Glyndwr University but also its current KTP achievements and the exceptional opportunities we can offer through KTP.
