The School of Science and Technology has a particularly strong research focus, with over 75% of Research in the Engineering Research Centre is conducted mainly in the areas of aerospace engineering and signal processing and control, while that in the Materials Science Research Centre is mostly concerned with water soluble polymers, hydrocolloids and photovoltaics. There is also a group working on the development of holographic optical coatings.
Its research rated as of international standing or higher, including work rated as world-leading, in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. The School has two research centres, namely the Engineering Research Centre and the Materials Science Research Centre, but academic staff in the School are also involved in research in computer science.
