Optical and opto-mechanical design
Our design expertise is available to any organisation at any stage of development or production, irrespective of whether you would like us to be involved further in prototype or manufacturing the finished product.
Optical design
OpTIC have successfully delivered advanced designs to many major and growing organisations and markets including:
- Military & commercial head-up/head-down/helmet displays including holographic & diffractive
- Single & multiwaveband thermal imaging optics
- Analytical instruments
- Image-intensified & CCD systems
- Space optics
- Copier/projector/camera/binocular/microscope & printing systems
Leading our consultancy programme is Professor Phil Rogers MBE FREng. Recognised as an expert in the design of optical equipment, including head-up displays, thermal imaging devices and space optics Phil has been granted 27 patents and has recently been awarded a visiting professorship by Cranfield University. His career in North Wales saw him work as a chief optics engineer with Pilkington Optronics Group until 2000 and then as Chief Optical Designer with Thales Optics until becoming an OpTIC consultant.
Opto-mechanical design
Opto-mechanics are integral to the manufacture of optical systems which is why OpTIC has its own in-house expertise. Techniques include simulation and optimisation using FEA/structural analysis to validate mechanical integrity under various g-loading conditions and temperature variations. The use of 3D CAD allows clients to visualise the design solutions and provides a ‘virtual prototype’ from which further modelling can be undertaken prior to producing detailed manufacturing drawings. This reduces risk and the time from product concept to production. Our multidisciplinary design techniques include
- Kinematic mounting principles
- Precision positioning mechanisms
- Flexure mounting
- Thermal and vibration stabilization
Our service is provided by experienced engineers who have successfully delivered a large number of high value opto-mechanical projects to various major clients including Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, VISTA Telescope, Daresbury Laboratory and FilmLight Ltd
