Micro-precision engineering – structured patterned drums
The quality obtained through replication is highly dependent on the quality of the master drum. OpTIC provides you with highly precise and durable micropatterned drums through our unique capabilities, machining systems and facilities.
Based on your optical design, customer defined structure or our own design from your specifications we can manufacture drums as well as radial Fresnels (on flat disks) with varying and extremely accurate shapes and patterns using our purpose built and unique drum diamond turning machine.
We can cut in both electroless nickel and copper plating and have reliable suppliers for both. Depending on your requirements we source our diamond tools from well-established diamond tool suppliers.

- Drum dimensions up to 1.9m long x 0.5m diameter.
- Four axis machining – enables structures varying along the drum circumference.
- Face or drum turning
- Fast tool servo, this enables lenslets in different aspect ratios and also micro fluidic structures.
- High speed synchronous micro-milling and flycutting , this enables very complex structures such as pyramids (square or triangular)
- In situ contact and advanced off line metrology such as interferometers and SEM – enables fast and accurate measurement of the machined structural form/texture
- Accuracies < 1mm, resolutions typically < 1nm & repeatabilities < 75 nm.
- Structures that require special tooling beyond radiuses and sharp tooling.
Facilities
To achieve the highest levels of quality, accuracy and repeatability the drum diamond machine needs to be housed in a very controlled and secure environment. Our machine is located in a purpose built clean room within a purpose built building featuring:
- Temperature stability - controlled to +/- 0.1C
- Clean environment - Class 10,000
- Air mounted on a separate concrete base minimises external vibration
Patterns
We have experience in cutting a wide variety of structures for customers in several application fields. This includes Fresnel lenses, BEF and other grooving structures, pyramids and lenslets in several aspect ratios.
