Large substrate precision grinding and polishing

OpTIC designs & produces ultra precise, complex and structured optical components and assemblies. We have pioneered a new process that has overcome the disadvantages of traditional polishing methods. The newly developed technology of fully automatic polishing and in situ measurement enables us to produce symmetrical, aspheric or freeform optics often required for low volume but highly specified tolerances/projects. The result is shorter production times and improved quality for markets such as:

  • High resolution camera lenses for unmanned space flights
  • Large mirrors/lenses for terrestrial astronomy telescopes
  • Satellite or terrestrial telescope optics
  • X-ray mirrors

As an example of a large challenging project - OpTIC is contracted to produce the prototype segments for the 42m European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) for the European Southern Observatory (ESO). However OpTIC is also in the business of undertaking the production of complex customized one off lenses/mirrors including:

  • Off axis paraboloids
  • High resolution, wide angles aspheres
  • Spherical and flat mirrors

Our facility houses some of the world's most effective ultra precision machining systems for producing advanced functional surfaces in large substrates such as lenses, mirrors and flats  using newly developed abrasive pad and fluid jet polishing technologies. These promise to revolutionise the industry by achieving greater accuracy at up to 6 times the speed of conventional techniques. We have full processing capability up to 2.0m comprising:

The “BoX” ultra precision large optics grinder. BoX takes a rough blank and grind the rear, edges, and bevels. It can then grind a rotationally-symmetric or free-form surface on the front, with low sub-surface damage and surface roughness, ready for polishing.

Zeeko ultra-precision polishing machines covering small, medium and large (up to 2.0 metres) capacities embodying classic, abrasive pad and fluid jet polishing technologies

We have a full suite of surface metrology equipment, including measurement interferometers, high stability for form measurement, miniature high accuracy, and white-light for small scale surface profiling. This metrology for surface analysis includes a range of test equipment from leading manufacturers such as 4D, Fisba, Zygo. Tallisurf and Nikon.

Positive feedback for ILM at Glyndwr

Wed 25th, Jan

In 2010, the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) contacted Glyndwr Innovations Ltd to manage and deliver ILM Level 7 training in Executive Coaching and Mentoring to fifty individuals who were engaged as mentors on the NWDA Business Mentoring Programme. The Business Mentoring Programme was a large-scale mentoring programme designed and managed by Mpulse on behalf of the NWDA.
