New Polishing Project

The team are now busy with another large optic polishing project. The 1.68m optic when finished will be the primary mirror of an optical telescope. Our CNC process will pre-polish, aspherise and then finish the surface of this large piece of zero-expansion glass to a surface form accuracy of <15 nm .  The in-process surface measurement will be achieved without the mirror being moved from the polishing machine. This is made possible by the optical test tower that is constructed above the polishing machine (more). This tower houses the interferometric measuring system used to quantify the surface finish between each polishing run until the final specifications are reached.
